Nicht lange nach der Deep Water Horizon
Katastrophe, ereignete sich ein weiterer Vorfall in Verbindung mit BP. Am Dienstag, 25. Mai, flossen mehrere tausend Barrel Rohöl aus der Trans-Alaska Pipeline in einen massiven Tank, der überlief. Glücklicherweise floss das überschüssige Rohöl in einen sicheren Bereich, so dass keine massiven Umweltschäden zu erwarten sind.
Diese sicheren Berieche werden auf einer Art Plattform errichtet, unter der eine undurchlässige Abdichtung liegt und die von Gebüsch umgeben sind. Über der Abdichtung liegt Kies.
Die Trans-Alaska Pipeline befördert Öl von Prudhoe Bay nach Valdez, wo das Öl aufgenommen und zu Raffinerien verschifft wird.
Nach dem Vorfall, wurde die 800 Meilen lange Pipeline deaktiviert, zumindest bis die Gefahr beseitigt wurde. Die Arbeiter am Unglücksort wurden evakuiert. Es gab glücklicherweise keine Verletzten.
Was passierte
Das Unglück ereignete sich während einer geplanten Abschaltung der Pipeline in der Nähe von Fort Greely, etwa 100 Meilen südlich von Fairbanks. Während einer Überprüfung des Brandschutzsystems, kam es in der Pumpstation zu einem Stromausfall, woraufhin ein Kontrollschaltkreis im batteriebetriebenen Notfallsystem ausfiel. Dieser Schaltkreis kontrollierte ein Ablassventil, welches geöffnet blieb und so den Überfluss verursachte.
Obschon die Ölverschmutzung eingedämmt ist und niemand verletzt wurde, stellt sich die Frage, wie sicher BP Einrichtungen sind und ob mehr Zwischenfälle dieser Art zu erwarten sind.

Not long after the deep water horizon catastrophe, another incident in connection with BP occurred. On Tuesday, May 25th, several thousand barrels of crude oil from the trans-Alaska pipeline spilled into a massive tank and overflowed. The overflow went into a containment area, so that no severe damage to the environment is to be expected.
These containment areas are built on a pad with an impervious liner underneath and surrounded by offset. Over the liner, gravel is placed.
The trans-Alaska pipeline brings oil from Prudhoe Bay to Valdez, where it is picked up and delivered to refineries.
Following the incident, the 800 mile long pipeline has been shut down until the hazard is removed. Workers at the site were evacuated as well. Fortunately, no one was injured.
How it happened
The accident happened when a scheduled pipeline-shutdown near Fort Greely, ca. 100 miles south of Fairbanks was in progress.
During a test of the fire command system, the power at the pump station failed and so did a control circuit in the back-up battery system. This circuit controlled a relief valve, which due to the failure stayed open and thus caused the spill.
Although the spill is being contained and no one got hurt, one comes to ask, however, how save BP facilities are and whether there are more accidents like this to expect.
