Saving Energy, sustainability and functionality are the next big thing and a SMART wants to be a big thing, as well.
SMART FORTWO ELECTIC DRIVE is the contribution of the Daimler daughter corporation. The small city car will be produced in a small series of 1.000 pieces. At the moment, a free test drive can be arranged in Berlin-Mitte until June 13th 2010.

The little smart shows itself as ecologically aware, not a single cloud of exhaust is to be seen. It drives only with electricity and it is so silent, that it is very easy to scare pedestrians. It provides the possibility of environmentally aware driving without a bad conscience. While in city traffic, the E-Smart easily swims with the swarm and leaves the impression of a lively drive. This is definitely his area.
One filling of the “Electricity-tank” costs about 2, 40 Euro per 100 kilometres! That is really cheap compared to the current gasoline prices. The E-Smart is a handy little city car, that fits in almost every parking lot and perfectly matches a sustainable way of life.
The SMART ELECTRIC DRIVE is only available for leasing and is not for sale. With a lease of 700 Euro per month, this electric car is certainly not an option for the average customer, but more a great means for firms that want a green image.
Maximum speed is limited to 100 km/h, so when driving on the highway, you will turn out to be an obstacle to trucks. After a distance of about 130 kilometres, however, the electricity is used up and the SMART has to be plugged to a 220 Volt power outlet. There it has to be charged for six hours. And this is one of the yet unsolved problems. There are about 50 “power up” stations in Berlin, but they are not sufficient to charge your car without “traffic jam”. For people owning their own garage, this isn’t quite a problem, but for someone living in an 4th floor apartment in the middle of Berlin, it is nearly impossible to charge the SMART.
A solution to this is currently in work.
To sum it up, it can be said that the SMART FORTWO ELECTRIC DRIVE provides a sound approach, although the idea isn’t well thought-out. Considering especially the long charging times and the short reach, much could be improved.

SMART FORTWO ELECTRIC DRIVE heißt der Beitrag der Daimler-Tochter. Das kleine Stadtauto gibt es in einer Kleinserie von 1000 Stück. Aktuell kann man in Berlin-Mitte bis zum 13. Juni 2010 eine Testfahrt kostenlos vereinbaren.

Der kleine SMART gibt sich umweltbewusst, denn kein einziges Abgaswölkchen ist zu sehen. Er fährt nur mit Strom, ist so leise, dass man Fußgänger erschrecken könnte und ermöglicht ein umweltbewusstes Fahren ohne schlechtes Gewissen. Im Stadtverkehr schwimmt der E-Smart locker mit und vermittelt ein flottes Fahrgefühl. Das ist eindeutig sein Revier.
Eine "Strom-Tankfüllung" kostet 2,40 Euro pro 100 gefahrene Kilometer! Das ist wirklich günstig, verglichen mit den heutigen Spritpreisen.
Der E-Smart ist ein praktisches kleines Stadtauto, welches in fast jede Parklücke und perfekt zu einem nachhaltigen Lebensstil passt.
Der SMART ELECTRIC DRIVE wird ausschließlich zum leasen angeboten und steht nicht zum Verkauf. Mit einer Leasingrate von 700 Euro im Monat ist das Elektroauto keine wirkliche Option für den Otto Normalverbraucher, sondern eher eine grüne Imagestrategie für Firmen.
Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit ist auf 100 km/h begrenzt, was ihn auf der Autobahn zu einer echten LKW-Bremse macht. Nach 130 Kilometern jedoch ist der Strom verbraucht und die nächsten 6 Stunden muss der SMART dann an einer normalen 220 Volt Steckdose aufgeladen werden. Und hier kommen wir leider zu einem noch ungelösten Problem. Es gibt ca. 50 Ladestationen in Berlin aber die reichen natürlich bei weitem nicht aus, um zukünftig "staufrei" sein Auto aufzuladen.
Für jemanden mit eigener Garage birgt es weniger ein Problem aber für jemanden der mitten in Berlin im 4. Stock eines Mietshauses wohnt ist es nahezu unmöglich seinen SMART aufzuladen.
An einer Lösung hierzu wird aber gearbeitet.
Zusammengefasst lässt sich sagen, dass der SMART FORTWO ELECTRIC DRIVE ein guter Ansatz aber eine nicht ausgereifte Idee ist.
Besonders in Hinblick auf die langen Ladezeiten und die geringe Reichweite besteht Verbesserungsbedarf.

Im durchschnittlichen deutschen Strommix wird pro erzeugter Kilowattstunde gut 600 Gramm CO2 freigesetzt. Der Vorteil des guten Wirkungsgrades von Elektromotoren wird durch den schlechten Wirkungsgrad und die schlechte CO2-Bilanz der Kraftwerke zunichte gemacht. Aus ökologischer Sicht wären Elektroautos nur dann vertretbar, wenn sie mit zusätzlich erzeugtem Ökostrom fahren würden

Der Weg zum Elektroauto ist weit, doch es geht auch eine Nummer kleiner: Die Automarken Mini und Smart stellen auf dem Pariser Salon elektrische Roller vor. Die Zweiräder gelten offiziell als Studien, doch eine Serienproduktion scheint sicher.
