What YOU CAN DO for an environment-friendly living
- preserve our climate, save money and stay fit. Use public transportation or a bicycle for short distances. And do you really need a car in a bigger city?
- electrical waste, ink cartridges and batteries should be disposed properly. These things are very dangerous to the environment.
- Do not throw away food. Groceries worth one billion of Euros are thrown away each year alone in Germany. If you cooked to much by accident, freeze it. And there are some tasty recipes that e.g. Patrick Jaros published in his Book “Nichts Wegwerfen Kochbuch” (Parragon Verlag, 2007)
- Drink tap water, it is the most thoroughly controlled food. It is cheap, almost always available and preserves the environment, because transportation and production of bottled water produces carbon-dioxide and requires petrol for bottles and crates.
- Protect the rain forests! Never buy furniture, window-frames or parquet floor made of tropical wood (e.g. Meranti, Bankirai, etc.). This wood mostly comes from overexploitation! Always use recycled paper, no matter if in the office, in school or in the bathroom etc.
Lots of paper can be recycled at home, maybe as grocery list or for wrapping up presents.
- Do not use chemical cleaning agents whenever possible. They pollute drinking water. Buy cleanser on soap-, lemon- vinegar- or ethanol basis.
- Save heating costs and money by putting on more clothes. Lower the temperature when you are sleeping or not at home. Close your windows and doors when heating. You can save lots of energy by airing the right way. The best way to do this is to open the windows for ten minutes, so that all air is exchanged. When the windows are open, turn down the radiator. Windows shouldn’t be tilted all the time, because this cools down the area around the windows.
- Save energy and money by switching off all electrical devices when you leave the house, don’t leave them on stand by. If ice has built up on the recuperators of your fridge, it needs more energy. Regularly defrosting prevents this. Defrosting is very easy in the cold seasons, when you can store groceries outside for the time.
- Save water and one more money. Abstain from the bathtub. Don’t let the water run when brushing your teeth. When showering soap yourself and then wash the soap of. A water-saving shower head makes it possible to save between 100 and 300 Euros a year. Good water-saving shower heads are available for only 20 Euro. This is the easiest and most effective way!
- Avoid plastics whose production needs petrol and create carbon-dioxide. Use fabric bags when shopping.
- Seed native wild flowers in your garden, plant hedges or build stone piles or a pond. By this you create a habitat for many endangered animals and you can enjoy butterflies. Imporant: Only use native fish and plants in your pond or you will chance the eco-system. Goldfish etc. transform your pond into an ecological waste land.
- Build a compost heap and compost organic waste. By this you relieve waste management and you get humus. Many earthworms accelerate compostation.
- painless donations: If you save 28 cents every day, you have 100 Euro by the and of the year that you can invest into environmental projects.
- Stay away from products using palm- or soy-oil. Enormous areas of rain forest are sacrificed for plantations.
- Write to members of the Government and urge them to prevent the import of tropical woods, palm-oil and soy-oil.
- Recycle your old cell phone. The electronics contain Tantalit. Rain forest is destroyed in Congo for mining it. Furthermore it is often mined by children and the profits finance warlords.
- Use rechargeable batteries. This saves money at long sight and saves the environment.
- Register yourself at the newsletters by “Rettet den Regenwald e.V.” (www.regenwald.org) and by “Ecological Internet” (www.ecologicalinternet.org) and participate regularly in online-protests. Very often, mailing-protests are successful.
- Talk with your friends, acquaintances and relatives about environmental problems. Maybe they want to help as well?
